Process Paper
Since sixth
grade I have been on my schools track team. I have always been interested in
sports, especially track and the Olympics. In sixth grade I
did a research project on the 1972 Olympics and that was a very interesting topic. So, I started by looking for some important people in the sports world
that fit the criteria for this year’s theme. I decided to do a leader in athletics, but I also wanted to do someone that helped shape and run The
Civil Rights Movement. I finally decide on Jesse Owens, which was a track star and a civil rights leader.
I started on the website 100leaders.org to see the traits of a leader and to see if any of those people were associated with Jesse Owens, unfortunately, there was none. There was, some important civil right leaders on that site. I thought the best place to look next was on the Official Olympic website, all that the site gave me was the time he ran his events, the distance of his broad jump, and pictures of Owens running in the Olympics. My best Primary Sources was the Ohio State University Archives, which has a photo gallery of Jesse Owens running before the Olympics, during the Olympics, and what Owens did after the Olympics. After the Olympic he did things like work with young athletes. All of these pictures that i found had caption that gave me information. The most important Secondary Source was Owens legacy article on the University of Ohio States Archives. This is the same website that had the photo gallery, but this article is on another tab. It gave me information about Owens legacy and him traveling the world to talk to people about his achievement and to encourage, youth especially. He taught them to always keep going and to never give up.
I have used Weebly before many times. I thought because I have experience in using this website and I featured that I would not have trouble implementing pictures and text to this website. I walked away from this experience with more practice with this website and I learned to upload a video from YouTube to website.
Jesse Owens showed leadership in many ways. First of all he accomplished what no other Olympic athlete had done before, winning four gold medals in one Olympic Games. He also showed leadership in The Civil Rights Movement, by showing many people around the world that black athletes deserve to compete in the athletic event around the world, like the Olympics. Jesse Owens left a huge legacy in athletics and race relations. He left a legacy in athletics by setting World and Olympics records. He also helped youth athletes by coaching and encouraging them to keep pushing to be the best. Owens legacy in civil rights and race relation is the way everyone's perspective of black athletes ability. Owens help discredit Hitler's "master race" theory and that may have changed Hitler's way he looked at other races. (500 Words)
